Careers in Kathakali

Dance has always been part of Indian celebrations.  Indian occasions cannot be completed without the shaking legs. Dancing is an inherent part of Indian culture. Kathakali has proved to be a good career option for many aspirants. It has taken on the tone and feel of the region. After mastering the dance one can go into being a full time dancer or choreographer, have your on troop and tour countries. There are many who choose to get ahead of on this to the subsequent generation and become teachers. Just like any profession one must have dedication. Income is good when the funds are good. If a person just want to be in for the money or fame then you may want to rethink, the dancer must have love for the art to survive in this field.

Different Roles

Teaching: This field requires a propensity for teaching, planning and endurance. A dance teacher must possess conscientious gen of practical and theoretical aspects of dance. Dancers who take up teaching as a profession can find jobs in schools, colleges, universities, dance institutes.

Choreography: Choreography means dance compositions, the grouping of dancers and establishing the sequence of dances. For this specific role, dancers with exceptional creative powers with skill to interpret music in terms of dancing are needed. Choreographers work in films, on stage, for television shows and video music shows. Future prospects are very bright for choreographer as more and more stage and TV shows are being organized these days. 


Performing: A performing artist must have ‘eye-catching’ appearance, facial expression, and skills to construe roles and most importantly stage presence. They must also have to be in tune with the interest of the general public. Numerous avenues are open for performing artists. Besides forming their own troupes they can take time out for coaching too.

Job Opportunities

Lots of dancers are employed by academies, kala kendras, Doordarshan, Dance troupes, All India Radio and teaching institutions engaged in imparting dance education.
Many schools appoint dance teachers on a full-time basis to manage cultural activities and train children for inter-school competitions, etc.

Dancing Remuneration

In this profession, salaries are not very high but are quite enough for a comfortable lifestyle. Personal training fetches good pay in this profession.
